Born into a family of soldiers, Lt.Col. Rai Mohan Vohra, distinguished himself in the army and rose to command the 4 Horse regiment of the armoured Corps during the 1971 war with Pakistan. The regiment leading the Indian infantry advances into the western sector, successfully captured the vital positions of Chakra and Dahira, despite the strong enemy presence.
On the 5th of December, the 4 Horse regiment gave a glorious account of itself in the battle of Basantar.27 enemy tanks were destroyed. Throughout the course of the battle, the Lt. Col. Moved at the head of his troops, from one forward position to the other, unmindful of the continuous machin gun fire from the enemy. The Regiment inspired by the Lt.Colonel's courage, fought gallantly and their determined resistance, helped push back the enemy.
Lt. Colonel vohra was awarded the Mahavir Chakra for his inspirational leadership.
