In July 1948, Pakistani soldiers launched an attack on Indian positions at Tharu about 13 kms from Leh. The bulk of the Indian forces fell back under the onslaught but major Hari Chandhung on to his post with a platoon. For 3 whole days enemy tried to get past him but in vain. The major dug in his heels, giving the Indian forces in Leh, time to reorganise their defences.
But for his bravery Leh would surely have fallen into enemy hands.On other occassion the major led a party of guerillas 96 km into hostile territory to raid a village and destroy an enemy gun located there.
Major Mahavir Chand was awarded the Mahavir Chakra for his gallantry ,courage and leadership.
