The Dogra Regiment was deployed on the western front during the Indo Pak war of 1971. On the night of 5th December, the Regiment commanded by Captain Devinder Singh Ahlawat launched an attack to capture the eastern end of the Dera Baba Nanak Bridge. The bridge was extremely well defended with machine guns and anti tank guns.
In his desperate run towards the machine gun, the Captain has sustained six bullet injuries. Even as his life ebbed away, he held on to the machine gun. Captain Ahlawat was posthumously honoured with the Mahavir Chakra
