Squadron Leader Madhvendra Banerji was a senior pilot with a fighter bomber squadron of the Indian Air force, during the 1971 Indo Pak war. The Indian army found it difficult to advance in the Chhamb sector due to the uneven terrain and absence of approach roads, and requested air support to oust the Pakistanis who were already well entrenched there.
Squadron Leader Banerji led 14 bombing missions and each time inflicted heavy damage on the enemy. The Squadron Leader personally destroyed two Pakistani tanks and two guns. The Pakistani armory was rendered ineffective and soon no longer posed a threat to the Indian ground forces.
For his daring sorties into the battle zone, Squadron Leader Banerji was awarded the Mahavir Chakra
