Major Mohinder Singh Chaudhary joined the Punjab regiment in 1956 and was stationed in the NEFA area in 1962. On the 9th of October, Major Chaudhary established a post at Singjang, with two platoons. However, the Chinese attacked his position from two sides.
Major Chaudhary found himself heavily outnumbered and short of weaponry, but he faced the enemy courageously. For more than 9 hours despite being wounded he inspired his men to resist a much superior armed force. He was finally ordered to withdraw.
In a pitched battle fought 11 days later, he inflicted heavy causalities on the enemy. Major Chaudhary was decorated with the Mahavir Chakra in 1962.
