2nd Lt. G.V.P.Rao

On 12th October 1962, 2nd Lt. G.V.P. Rao led a company of grenadiers in the occupation of Drokung Samba to rienforce the Khinzemane sector in NEFA.

On 20th October, a Chinese infantry battalion supported by mortar subjected the Indian positions to heavy Shelling. Despite the absence of mortar or artillery support the Indians withstood several attacks. But a withdrawal became impossible once the enemy destroyed the bridge over the river Nyamjungchu.

2nd lt. Rao manning a light machine gun fought gallantly inspite of the setbacks. His example was an inspiration to his men who in the highest traditions of the armydug to their heels to fight the last man. 2nd Lt. Rao was reported missing at the end of the battle and was presumed to have died a hero's death in defence of nation. He was awarded the Mahavir Chakra.
