In March 1962, the 4 Rajputana rifles, which included Lieutenant Ved Prakash Trehan was a part of the UN forces deployed in Congo to end hostilities in that country. On the 29th December the lieutenant led a patrol to locate enemy positions.
Proceeding through dense jungle, he suddenly found himself within a 100 metres of enemy trenches. The enemy opened fire with machine guns. The Indians were in unfamiliar territory and soon found themselves surrounded. The Lieutenant led his men in a fierce charge and broke through the enemy ranks.
But he was mortally wounded in the process and died soon after. Lieutanant Trehan was posthumously honoured with the Mahavir Chakra for his courage and heriosm
